New Zealand 2026 – Day 2

Day 2 saw us wake in the town of Tekapo – a very popular tourist haunt.
Our sunrise shoot was at the iconic Church of the Good Shepherd – an active church built on the edge of Lake Tekapo.
We moved mid morning a few k’s up on east side of the lake.

Day Two – Church of the Good Shepherd

A fantastic location, but sunrise was a bit of a fizzer and we battled a strong wind for the whole time we were there. But right at the end, the sun came to the party and lit up the mountain range opposite the church.

Day Two – East side of Lake Tekapo

Classic South Island landscape! Rich foreground, an almost jade-blue colour to the glacial water, and the snow capped peaks struggling to break through the low cloud. As we were quickly discovering, the weather/sky/light changes very quickly and you can’t afford to put your camera away for more than a minute.
The pictures of the trees were taken with my back to the lake at a small inlet further up the east side. I really enjoy the layered effect of the different foliage and then the mountains in the background.

Day 3 – Sunset – Lock Cameron, Ben Ohau, near Twizel

Another fizzer of a sunset, but this was a peasant spot away from the crowds, with some nice autumn colour. After much playing with the edits, I settled on these handful of images, including a couple in B&W of poplar trees, appreciating the simple reflection in the Loch .

A return to Floriade in Canberra (an annual display of over 1 million spring bulbs – mainly tulips – in Commonwealth Park) was long overdue. It didn’t fail to impress, but we did miss the peak of the tulips due to the warm weather in early spring bringing them on earlier than usual.
