New Zealand 2026 – Day 3

This ranks as one of the best starts to our days in NZ!
We stayed in the town of Twizel overnight, and planned a sunrise shoot in the morning at a sheltered spot on a bay of Lake Ruataniwha.
From there we moved mid morning to another spot on Lake Ruataniwha that had been adapted for use by a rowing club, then to Kellands Pond for more lovely autumn colour before heading further south to Lake Ohau for the evening and night.

Day 3 – Sunrise on Lake Ruataniwha, Twizel.

The morning was frosty and dead still, and the sun rose in a clear sky. As you will see below, the autumn leaves just glow as the sun hits them! I know there’s a lot of images here (and a whole lot more not published here!), but it was hard to pick fewer.

Day 3 – The rowing course, Lake Ruataniwha

This is a spot not far around the shore of the lake from where we did the sunrise shoot, and in fact, some of these shots look back to where we were at sunrise. I’ve included a couple of panoramas to give a sense of the sweep of the view and the grandeur the mountains bring to the location.

Day 3 – Kellands Pond, Glenbrook

Doesn’t sound very grand, but this pond provided some lovely autumn colour, again away from the tourist crowds. I also had a play with some intentional camera movement to produce a couple of abstract shots from the golden yellow trees bordering one side of the pond.

A return to this famous lookout at Blackheath – this time at sunrise. This was prompted by a fabulous photo my youngest son, Sam took c.2003 using our very first digital camera, a 5 megapixel Canon Powershot (from memory). That image was printed and framed and still looks amazing for a mere 5Mp shot.I was hoping…
