New Zealand 2026 – Day 5
This was a big day with the camera. It started with a delightful sunrise shoot on the beach at Wanaka with the famous (infamous?) Wanaka Tree. While perhaps a little clichéd, it is a lovely place to experience a sunrise. We got to the location really early, snagging a waterside spot, allowing us to dodge all the tourists with their selfie sticks!
The day ended with a sunset shoot (but without the sun!) in an isolated spot with the remain of an old jetty, which made for some lovely atmospheric shots.
Day 2 – The Wanaka Tree
I know there are a lot of images here, but the scene changed so rapidly, that I just kept taking images!

Day 5 – Beacon Point, Wanaka
Mid morning, and a couple of k’s around the bay from the Tree, we stopped for a shoot in the increasing cloud and wind. Not the best of conditions, but one or two that pick out some autumn colour from across the bay against the hills/mountains and threatening sky.
Then a couple of us found this stick. Christened the ‘divining stick’ it was the best bit of foreground of the morning!

Day 4 – Jackson’s Orchard, Cromwell
Enroute to Queenstown, we stopped for refreshments at Cromwell. At Jackson’s Orchard on the main road we wandered into these remarkable orchards of Apricot trees. They are planted in rows, intentionally on a slant with the upper branches held in place with a network of wire cables. Construction aside, the colours of the foliage were just lovely, as was the inescapable leading lines!

Day 5 – Lake Wakatipu, Queenstown
Our last stop of the day – another ‘sunset’ shoot – minus the sun. But a short hike up Jack’s Point beach found us the lovely remains of an old jetty. With the mountains in the background and a dramatic (read: wet) sky, we got some nice atmospheric shots.
