Sculpture by the sea happens every year and is a display of around 100 sculptures set into the landscape on the south headland of Bondi Beach and stretching around to Tamarama Beach.

This is the first time I’ve visited it and decided to go with a friend for a mid-week sunrise shoot. This was partly for the potential of special light conditions at that time, and partly to try and avoid the thousands of visitors that crowd the headland on the weekends.

We had a beautiful morning, although a few more clouds in the east would have been nice for some addition colour in the sky.
In the end we focused on a relatively small number of the sculptures and working to make the most of the pre-dawn/dawn light before the sun got too high.

As usual, these images are best viewed on a desktop/laptop screen.

Location

As mentioned, the display is set in Marks Park on the south head of Bondi and trickles around the headland, following the very popular coastal walk path and onto Tamarama Beach.

Odyssey

This very large rocket had to be craned into the site and sits right out on the edge of the cliff.

Where the wind blows

This wicker-like structure is mounted on a post and can rotate with the breeze.

Surge

I loved the sculptures (like this one) made from highly reflective, polished metal. They work so well with the dawn light.

Infinity

Another lovely polished metal sculpture that plays so creatively with the sea behind it (the water off Tamarama Beach).

City Time

An unusual metal sculpture. I liked the play on activity and busyness of city life

Navigating the Winds

Another reflective, polished metal sculpture that works so well placed on the edge of the cliff above the water.

Milarky

A playful and fun sculpture!

Sharnana

Not the kind of banana you want to find in your lunch box

Shadows of Perception

Playing with light and perspective

Thoughts

An evocative representation of the stress of modern life

Togetherness

A smaller, but powerful sculpture

Crouching, Thinking, Launching

A lovely, simple piece to view with the seas and surfers in the background
